Equinor and Polenergia with contracts for transportation and installation of offshore wind farm foundations for Bałtyk 2 and 3

Equinor and Polenergia have signed agreements with Heerema Marine Contractors for the transportation and installation of monopiles - transition elements and offshore substations for the Bałtyk 2 and 3 offshore wind projects. The work is to be completed in 2026 and 2027.

Heerema Marine Contractors is a Dutch offshore wind contractor with extensive experience in the complex installation of floating structures offshore using its own fleet of floating cranes. The contract includes the transportation and installation of 100 monopiles and transition pieces, which will be transported from production facilities and installed in the Baltic Sea.

We are consistently moving closer to the construction stage of our offshore wind farms, among the first and largest in the Baltic Sea. Activities are proceeding according to schedule, and construction work will begin soon. Thanks to an agreement with another experienced contractor, we are moving closer to our goal of feeding the Polish grid with green energy from the Bałtyk 2 and 3 projects as early as 2027. Their power will meet the needs of more than 2 million households. A story of unprecedented magnitude is unfolding before our eyes, in terms of the decarbonization of the energy mix and the benefits to the Polish economy of such advanced investments.

CEO Polenergia S.A.

The signed contracts also include the transportation and installation of the foundations and deck of the project’s offshore substation. To install the foundations of some of the largest wind farms in the Baltic Sea, the contractor will use its vessel, equipped with the heavy lift vessel Thialf. Its advanced capabilities make it ideally suited for complex tasks associated with large-scale offshore wind power projects.

The signing of the contract for the transportation and installation of foundations for the Bałtyk 2 and 3 offshore wind farm projects brings us one step closer to final investment decision and start of construction. Our projects, which will be among the first to be built in the Baltic Sea, are important for the development of the Polish offshore sector, accelerating the energy transition process and increasing Poland's energy independence. Energy from the Baltic 2 and 3 offshore wind farms will power two million Polish homes as early as 2027. We are proud to carry out our mission of providing energy in a safe, sustainable and responsible manner to Poland.

Michał Jerzy Kołodziejczyk

Country Manager Equinor Poland

The plan adopted by the contracting authorities and the contractor assumes that all monopiles and jacket foundations will be installed during the piling season in 2026, while topsides will be installed in separate campaigns in 2026 and 2027.

The Bałtyk 2 and 3 offshore wind farms, with a total capacity of 1440 MW, will be located in the Polish exclusive economic zone of the Baltic Sea, at a distance of 22 to 37 km from the coastline. After contracting suppliers for all structural components and obtaining the necessary permits, the phase of their implementation will begin.

The first energy from the Bałtyk 2 and 3 wind farms is expected to flow into the grid as early as 2027. The commercial phase of their operation is planned from 2028. In the next phase of offshore wind power development in Poland, Equinor and Polenergia are developing the Bałtyk 1 project with a capacity of up to 1560 MW, which will be about 80 kilometers offshore.

The Bałtyk projects, developed by Equinor and Polenergia, will once operational, power more than 4 million Polish households with green energy. Preparatory work on the onshore part and the start of construction of the service base in Leba are planned for later this year.
