The place where the sea and land parts meet is located in Lędowo, west of Ustka. The purpose of the work started is to prepare the site for horizontal directional drilling (HDD, or Horizontal Directional Drilling) under the seabed, beach and dunes. This means that export cables will be brought from the sea to land using a trenchless method in a non-invasive and safe way for people and the environment.
The preparation of the interface between sea and land infrastructure is a key step in the perspective of the entire investment. The landfall area was determined after complex engineering and environmental studies. During the study, a number of aspects were taken into account, including the ecosystem, land use, historical features, as well as the technical feasibility of drilling.
Work on the drilling will begin in mid-March and will last until September 2025. The work will be carried out west of the entrance to beach No. 37 in Lędowo. The cables are to come ashore at a distance of about 160 meters from the shoreline, just beyond the boundary of the technical strip. The maximum length of one drill is about 1.5 km, while the maximum depth is about 40 m. For each of the four cable lines, one drill will be made with a diameter of about 900 mm.
The HDD method involves horizontal directional drilling at the planned depth using special drill heads. The work will consist of several stages: pilot drilling, widening the holes, installing a special pipe to protect the cable, and in the final stage – pulling the cables through the culvert prepared in this way. Hanab is the main contractor for this part of the project.
All construction work has been designed to minimize potential obstructions. The beach will be available to residents and tourists most of the time when underground work is being carried out.
During the construction phase of the marine section, the noise levels emitted by vessels will be similar to those generated by other ships and boats. On the other hand, during construction on the land section, sounds will be emitted by vehicles and machinery used for earthworks. Noise and vibration emissions in both the offshore and onshore areas will occur locally and will be strictly limited in time.
The offshore wind farms Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3, with a total capacity of 1,440 MW, will be located in the Polish exclusive economic zone of the Baltic Sea, 37 and 22 km from the coastline. The electricity they will produce will flow via cables through the towns: Lędowo, Pęplino and Duninowo in the Municipality of Ustka, and Bruskowo Wielkie, Bruskowo Małe and Wielichowo in the Municipality of Redzikowo, to the Polish Power Grid station in Wierzbięcin.
The land corridor of the connection infrastructure, about 14 km long, will run underground to preserve the tourist and landscape values of the area. The first energy from the Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 projects will flow into the grid as early as 2027. The commercial phase of their use is scheduled from 2028.
