Northvolt plant in Gdańsk powered by green energy from Polenergia

Europe's largest energy storage facility along with a research and development centre has been built in Gdańsk. Starting in October, the building will be powered by green energy from a Polish wind farm. This will be possible due to a clean energy supply agreement that the factory's owner, Northvolt, has signed with Polenergia Group.

Northvolt is a European manufacturer of lithium-ion cells and battery systems that are manufactured in an environmentally sustainable way. The company, which employs more than 5,000 people, has announced the development of the world’s greenest battery.

In order to implement this project, all Northvolt plants are to be powered by renewable energy sources. That is also the model adopted at the newly built plant in Gdańsk. Such green energy to supply the production will be provided by Polenergia, Poland’s largest private energy group.

The energy transition is not going to proceed without battery energy storage and that is why how we approach their production is so important. At Northvolt, we have known from the beginning that we wanted to achieve this in an environmentally sustainable way, using clean energy and recycled raw materials. The agreement to supply electricity from renewable sources is crucial for the implementation of low-carbon production at our Gdańsk plant.

Robert Chryc-Gawrychowski

CEO of Northvolt in Poland

The sales contract is structured around the cPPA formula together with the PPA+ service, which consists of the comprehensive securing of the customer’s consumption needs. Green energy for Northvolt will be generated, among other things, at the 38 MW Szymankowo Wind Farm.

Supporting the energy transition is one of Polenergia's key missions. We carry it out not only by generating clean energy at our wind and photovoltaic farms, but also by supplying it also directly to the end user. This is precisely the type of agreement, based on a long-term cPPA, we have signed with Northvolt. We are now proud to power the largest energy storage plant in Europe using our green energy. This is an important step towards building a zero-emission economy.

Polenergia will supply 100% of the annual demand for clean electricity for the newly built Northvolt plant in Gdansk. The supply agreement with Northvolt Systems Poland Ltd. was signed by Polenergia Obrót S.A.. The commencement of electricity supply is scheduled for no later than 1 October this year.

The total surface area of the Northvolt plant in Gdansk is more than 25,000 square metres. The project has received support from the European Innovation Fund.
